Systematics and Biodiversity: Concepts and Prospects (2008)
This workshop brings together historians, philosophers, and systematists around a set of conceptual issues that are central to systematics and taxonomy. We will address the following questions:
- Is there a single, empirically defensible species concept that applies across all of life? If not, what set of concepts should be adopted?
- What is, or should be, the 'unit' of biodiversity?
- What is the appropriate role of systematics and taxonomy among the sciences of biodiversity?
The workshop will feature both formal presentations and less formal discussions aimed at producing white papers for further discussion as
the IISE matures and expands. The event is scheduled for March 4th and 5th, and will be held on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University.
